Wednesday. Mr Walters was elected Mayor by a majority of 872. There was great excitement. The files of papers per Otago show that for the Melbourne Cup, Imperial has come into the betting market at 100 to 7 ; Echo, 100 to 5, ICingsborough is first favourite for both the Metropolitan and the Champion Eaces. Lurline has been backed at a shade less odds than Eingborough for the Champion, and Calumny is first favourite for the Hawkesbury Handicap. In the Supreme Court case of Glassford v. Eeid, an action to recover £1000 damages for polluting a stream at Manuherika, the jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff, one shilling for polluting the stream and £50 for damage to-property.
