THE RESPONSIBILITY OF TREASURERS OF FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.
"■ (To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib,—ln your .issue of July the 9th, you state "that Judge Williams, when givingjudgement in-tho case of an Oddfellows' Lodge at Christchurch, against on©-James, -for,- larceny as. r a' bailee, that Judge Williams stated that the Treasurer of, any ; ? Friendly-.-.Society: could rob the same without rendering himself liable to imprisonment. , Now, sir;,l-,wish to.ask you, or any of your correspondents, where the.-defect in; the law;iis, as, it, stands, at the present time ? Or whether the nonregistration of 'Frieiidlyr.Societies-in New Zealand has anything to do with the questionratrassue;-as.it.is :an undoubted fact that no Friendly Society on the Thames can produce a certificate' from the ■ Registrar—the revising Barrister being the only authority we have got. ■ I must say that I am surprised at those who knew that such a- state of 1 things did exist, and that they winked at it so long. However,"as the question- is about to receive., the attention ,of the various societies 6n"the Thames, and,T hope, in other parts of the Colony, I will leave the matter' in the hands of those better able to deal with it than I am. —I am, etc. ' - ' " A MEMBER OF A, F.
