THE WEEK.
In spite of causes which might be supposed to operate unfavorably, there has been noticeable a decided improvement in raining matters during the week. This has not been altogether due to. the influence which Tairua has exercised, although that has been considerable. The mines on the Thames proper have shown up better lately, and this has led to a renewal of confidence amongst ,inve,stors and speculators. The Tairua stocks were affected to a marked degree by the litigation which was commened early in the xyeelt, but as soon as that litigation was settled, the shares wont up as quickly as they had fallen. Brilliant as were the prospects of the Tairua before, they have improved since last week's retrospect was penned. Good reefs are reported as in hnnd in several of the leases, and a cry will very soon be heard for machinery.^ The new reef in the' Prospectors' claimsaid to l>e ever so many feet wide —has turned out eytraordinarilyfich, namely at the rate of about 48 ounces to the ton., The gold is not of a very hjgli standard, but if the crushing of large parcels should turn out yields anything like approaching the small lots, the quantity of the gold will more than recompense the proprietors for any falling off in the quality." Once upon a time, with yields like the Tairua has had, the excitement would have been great, but thore is a laudable degree of caution prevailing amongst all classes at present in regard to their dealings in scrip. The claim which was once so famous—Long Drive—but which has for a long tima been in the background, has, by judicious management, been onco more placed amongst the dividend paying claims. It is to be hoped that the ,two shillings per share, paid this week, will 8 soon be repeated^. 'Amongst tho gold returns this week will be found one three figure amount from tributers. There' was one last week also. This system of working seems to be most successful in winning, gold. Next week
it is ; .probable . that; an event ■' of' some interest will take place. It is ex-' pectcd that the ■ fine new battery of the Bright Smile Company will 1 be started. When that plant gets into full swing there should a perceptible increase in the weekly gold returns. The Waio-Karaka; companies continue to put out large quantities of quartz, .which will be still further in- „ creased when the Bright Smile' resumes ' full work. TJjc Manukau has produced a fine-yield for the month, but no dividend ' has yet been declaimed. The full gold returns are annexed: — :;
