This day; James Maokay in Reply. Mr James Mackay, Junr., writos to tho Cross to the effect thafc he does not believe Sir George Grey has made the statements "so utterly regardless, of facts as those attributed to him " relative to the Tairua block and a thousand acres therein. ; He says that although the Superintendent had several interviews with him before he went South, he.never asked for the agree? ment under which Ohinemuri was opened. That he did not require a copy of it to ascertain whether he could grant agriculr tuial leases, as a question to himself or the Government would immediately have received an affirmative answer. _ That Sir George Grey would not permit him to break open his box and overhaul his privatie papers (?)/ He goncludes'by stating that he is quite prepared to meet the Superintendent before a Committee of the House of Bepre?entatives, but he objects;to Sir George Groy ; constituting himself accuser and judge. Attempted Suicide.
-John Hunter, baker, was brought up atthfe police Cour£charged with attempting'to; commit' suicide by cutting his throat with a razor. He had been drinking lately, and also thwarted in love. He^-was prevented fronukilling ;hi.mself by his sister's Efforts'. She wasfcut in the struggle, but neither very seriously. j
