A schoolmaster named Pilkington was fined by the Resident Magistrate 20s and costs for'caning one of his scholars so severely as to leave discolouration upon the lad's back. '
This day. Tlie Wellington Chamber of Commerce decided last night.to decline to, ;be represented at a conference of delegates from the; .various Chambers, of Commerco in the Australian colonies, as suggested by the Brisbane Chamber. The Chamber also discussed the question of harbor and port dues, and a committee was appointed to obtain information as to the charges in .other ports, and to bring thoso matters and increased "wharf accommodation under the notice of the proper authorities/ The Chairman, in the course of his remarks, characterised the charges of the ■port, as disgraceful. Captain McJntyre said they might well be reduced one half. Another described the wharf accommodation as absurdly insufficient.
