MONTHLY GOLD RETURNS.
The returns-given below represent, as far as we have been able to obtain them, ,the yields from the various mines in the iHauraki G-oldfield from the Ist to the 31st ! May inclusive, and we propose to give each month's return as completed. It will be necessarily incomplete, as considerable difficulty exists in procuring the information which we could wish to obtain to make the list complete. For instance, there are numerous small batteries -at which trial cru*hings are manipulated, the parties interested in which—for reasons best known to thenuelvet—withhold the results. In seme instances the banking institutions decline to furnish any information regarding their purchases;. Then .there are private tailings mills, ihjj proceeds of'which; if-put down at all, must be imere guess work. We propose, therefore,' in our monthly list, to give only such yields as are reliable, leaving out all mfen-v 'tion of the itemst which are put down to the credit of tailings and trial lots. '.A difficulty also exists in obtaining the quantities of stone crushed. In some instances the dirt is conveyed to batteries by companies who rent the mills at per week. No account is "taken of the num-, her of tons crushed, ;abd to give an approximate might be only misleading in the attempt to get at ah average yield. Many companies have batteries of their own—wholly or in part employed on their own stuff continually.; :In continuing this monthly report we shall endeavor to make it as complete as possible, but we do not guarantee that it will represent the total yield of gold from the fiold,'tp obtain which correctly we should require access to sources of information to which we arejdenied. Our monthly list will, however, give an index to the principal gold returns, of -the. district, and it will rest with managers and others to assist i us in making; it as complete as possible without divulging what may properly be; rallied purely private business, such as returns from tailings. ..
