UNITED PUMPING ASSOCIATION GRANT.

A meeting of mine managers and other gentlemen was held at the Governor Bowen Hotel on Saturday evening to hear from Mr William Rowe the result of his mission to Auckland re the grant to the Pumping "Association. There were about a dozen present —Mr William Eowe occupying the chair.

Mr Howe explained the cause of the delay which had occurred, and then proceeded to state what he had done while in Auckland. He had obtained access to all the documents having reference to the Pumping Association grant, arid carefully perused the same. Some of tho most important he had copied and would lay before the meeting. After careful investigation , the conviction had been forced upon him that the Province had all along been held responsible for the advance to the Association/and that unless the Council voted the money it would-not be available for the purpose for which it had. been granted. (IV^r ...lip we. explained the position of affairs very fully, and.read portions of the documents which he had brought with him, all of which go to prove that from the first the loan had been regarded as a loan to the Province.) Mr Carpenter, M.P.C., explained his reasons for the action he had taken in the Council in this matter. "■*■'>■■.'■

After the question had been pretty well canvassed by the gentlemen present, Captain Eichards proposed that a memorial be drawn up for presentation to the Provincial Council, and that mine managers should be prepared to give evidence to a select committee if required.

The motion was seconded by Captain Souter, and the following gentlemen were appointed to * carry out the terms of the resolution by going to* Auckland to gire evidence:— Messrs YV. Eowe, G. Black, W. Sims, W. Sully, A. Dewar, S. E. Richards, T. B. Hicks, and 11. Macdonald.

The Chairman and ■Mr Eichards wero deputed to draw up the memorial. A.vote of thanks to Mr Eo\are for the trouble ho had taken in Auckland in investigating matters was unanimously passed, and the meetirfgdispersed.
