That witty contraband, Ike Xfelily, happened to pass just at thi* time, and, meeting Dr. Mapes, inquired, 'Dr. Mapes, who's dead at Masser Hustis's ?' • .No one, I think,' replied the doctor. 'Oh yes,' persisted Ike,''there must he somebody dead there, for sartain sure. 1 ' Why, I am positive not,' said the doctor, • for I should certainly have heard of it if there had been a death in the family.' ' Then,' exclaimed Ike, raising his voice, and pointing to the long, lazy row of his sable brethren hanging over the fence, ' what's all dis^ yer mournin' for strung along do fence.'"
