Wednesday. In the Provincial Council last night, tho Secretary for Public Works made a long statement of the estimated expenditure during the ensuing year. The estimatcs'include :-f-Buildirig and works,':revotcs, ~ £215,98|> ;? new votfe,- £85,169; municipalities and road boards, re-votes, £22,878 ; new votes, £15,000; immigration, £3,000; railway works, re-votes, ,£142j244); ne\v n votes, £163;180 ment offices, re-vote, £14,540. By not proceeding with the erection of the museum additions, by using one wing of the normal schools for collegepurposes instead of erecting a college, and by cutting down other items in the unexpended vote of last year, the Government hope to affect a saving,«f £70,446, and as £186,000 were previously voted for works now in progress, which will not have to be paid during the current year, the estimated cashidefrcit tosthe; 31st Match, fS7M was/reduced\.toL£24:,sß4, though the actual deficit, including a deferred liability of £186,000, would be £210,584. The Government policy was generally approved.?! It is;expfcctedrihey/wllll he able to command a good working
majority. All the Canterbury salmon ova turned out worthless.
