So confideat is he of being able to do ■ this, that he has expressed his willingness to undertake the job on the condition that he receives £40 for his trouble, but in the event of hi« failing to satisfy a competent engineer of the practicability of tbe route he will engage to pay a sum of £40. It might be worth while to give this man a " show."
At the Besident Magistrate's Court this morning, one person was fined for drunkenness. His Worship the Mayor was on the Bench.
The usual monthly meeting of the Sir Walter Scott Lodge, No. 524, S.C., was held at the Freemasons' Hall last night. There was a good attendance. Several candidates were admitted, and initiated. A rote of £10 was made by the lodge to the fund being raised for a'monument to the late B.W.D.P.G.M. Bereridge.
On the 12th instant was supposed to have been initiated a new order of things in relation to, telegraphic shipping arrirals, ;but if the new system has not -been better worked in other places than at the* Thames it is infinitely woitalihatt iifie" oiar "T^"WrTvaT~6r~"ffepar ture has been placed on the board since the 12th, although one or two steamers have arrived; and as some of the Press Agents invariably neglect to say how they receive the news, we are likely to remain in ignorance of many' arrivals until they hare again taken their departure.
As notified in yesterday's telegrams Mr Daniel has been appointed manager of the Crown Princess mine, vice Mr J. B. Beeche, resigned. Mr Daniel has been some time employed in the mine as submanager, and he is therefore thoroughly acquainted with the system of working adopted. Besides this he brings to bear upon his work a practical experience of mining extending over twenty-eight years, twenty-one years having been spent in goldmining. The Crown Princess people are fortunate in obtaining the services of such a manager.
We learn that His Worship the Mayor has received letters from residents in Walter-street, whose property is affected by the Karaka Creek, stating that they are quite agreeable to the straightening of the creek.
A man named Henry Higson, who some time ago lost a sum of £40 at Ohinemuri and recovered the same, has forwarded a thank offering of £2 to the Thames Hospital, through -^Warden Fraser.
