It is satisfactory to mote that quartz goldmining is making progress throughout the Colony, and that its rapid development bids fair to add materially to the wealth of our resources. _ In the district of Inangahua this is noticeable, as well as in the southern district of < which the town of Cromwell, in the Province of Otago, is the centre. The Inangahua Herald publishes the following table, which shows the yield from the reefs during the quarter ended 31st March, 1875, and the corresponding quarter of 1874. If will be noticeable that the average yield is not up to an

ounce to the ton, yet during the quarter handsome dividends were paid:— Return of Quartz Crushed and Yield of Gold in the Inangahua District during; the quarter ended March 31st, 1875 :—

Referring to the nwnber. of tons crushed the Herald says : —"lt must be noted that the number of tons crushed is in some instances but approximately correct. In claims where a record is kept of the number, of tons crushed the figures are as correct as it is possible to get them, but in some instances the number of tons is arrived at by the length of time that the batteries have crushed, and in this way the quantity of stone can be very accurately estimated, when the crushing capacity of a battery has, beeq fairly tested." In' the matter of dividends, it appears that the amount disbursed in this direction during the. three months 1 was 58...6s Bd, distributed as follows : —Wealth of Nations, ; Golden Fleece, j Fiery Cross, 4"9oo ; Phoenix, j£533 6P Bd-; rCompared withtheyield of gold from reefs in this district we regard these results as extremely favorable, for the Thames dividends .will not show;such a proportion to trie yield as; these above given, although many of the mines give more gold per ton. In fact the approximate .estimate of tons of dirt treated on the Thames invariably shows an apparent average of something over an ounce to the ton. .. :
