THE CALEDONIAN.
Another lot of specimens was taken out of the workings in the. intermediate level this morning. CJaptain Richards is now working on the three small leaders in this level and a lode from No. 3 shaft, in both of which directions he is getting nice looking stone. I have seen some of - the specimens. They are thickly impregnated with the precious metal, and promise to swell the gold return.for the company considerably. The No. 3 shaft, leader takes its course through a corner of li the Golden Crown ground and into a sec- "-; tion of the Caledonian area which has not been worked upon at all. The manager pur-poses-following it up, having obtained = permission from the Golden Crown to cut through the corner piece of their ground' above mentioned.-. In the lower level No. 3. reef is being driven on, and there is a g»od show ofantomony in the stone,, but nothing more. Sinking is still postponed, owing to the presence of water, which presents a complete barrier to the progress of operations in this direction. Ther# is some obstacle to the draining' of the Caledonian at this depth, which at present cannot be explained. Some time since the Albion and Tookey Companies, jointly, commenced* a tunnel from the Pumping Association.through the hill. Having driven some distance the. reef was lost, but found again, and this took a 7 large" quantity of water from the Caledonian. But at present the water is as strong as ever, while the Pumping Association have little more water than, is required for their own use. Crushing will be > commenced for the company "as soon as the battery (Prince Alfred)as ready to receive the.stone, of which there is now a sufficient, quantity on hand to make a start.
