Twelve owners and master!! of coasting vessels write to the Times calling the attention of the harbor authorities to the urgent necessity for providing* new, or increasing the present wharf accommodation by the erection of a landing stage along the reclaimed land. Dunedin, Tuesday. It rained hard, last night., and the weather was very cold and unpleasant; with prospects of rain. The town is crowded with people, who have come in. for the races. Pertobe was sold yester-" day, with all engagements, for 155 guineas. lh« Maiden Plate : This was a splendid race. King Philip made a bad start, and won by a neck ; he could have won by any distance aod came in hinds down. The order was—King Philip, llerculej, and Daniel O'JRourke. '- ,"'-.: :
The Dunedin Cup : Traitor was fancied on the course very much, but ran a bad third. Ngaro was the favourite in the betting, and came in last. Castaway fell into a ditch, and was out of the race. Earl of Lynne disappointed his backers. Hercules made the running from the start for Templeton, who came up in spltndid style and won easily. The order of all the starters was — Templeton, Sight Bower, Traitor, Atlas, Hercules, Earl of Lynne, Ngaro, The following horses wore scratched :—^Pertobe, Tripolis and £pritsail. Just before the start Ngaro was the favourite and Templeton the second favourite. Traitor was next in the betting. Tempieton was the best conditioned horse ou the course. There was a heavy squall while the Cup race was being run. The time was 4min lOfsecs.
Newmarket Stakes: Wee Lad and the Tadmore colt were scratched. Elfin King made the running, and won, close pressed by Spritsail, who was second, and Bothwell third. Somnarubula made a bad start.
Publicans' Handicap: Templeton and the Tadmore Colt were the favourites. Barwon Jed at the start, but was sooii collared by Templeton, who won easily; King Phillip, second; Tadmore colt, third. 3pritsail, Verbena, Pertobe, and Hercules were scratched. . Templeton and his owner (Dplamain) were loudly cheered after both Cup and Publicans' races..
