It is stated by advertisement in another column that Sir George Grey will address the electors of the Thames, re the Superintendency, on Friday evening. From Sir George Grey may be expected something out Vf the ordinary line of election speeches. He has no purpose to gain by making rash promises—no ends to serve by disguising his real opinions in utterances carefully weighed to suit his hearers. Sir.George Grey has opinions on political matters v.hich have been formed in a different school to that in wh'ch most of our statesmen have graduated ; opinions matured in the course of a long official career; and grounded on knowledge, and experience. As all opposition to fir George's candidature appears to. have been removed, his consent to address the electors here and in Auckland may be considered as a great concession to the wishes of "the people in the two great centres of population, and may' further be regarded as a fresh instance of his disi»terestedness in sacrificing a position of dignified ease for the cares and troubles of office at the call
of the people. Sir George has nothing to gain by the course he has adopted ; the sacrifice on his part is. one which, few men would make, and there is no doubt his appearance in this community in the character of a candidate for tiie ?uperintendericy will gather together such an assemblage as has hitherto been unknown in connection with political aaatters~6n the Thames. ■ <•?
