Sir H.-Barkley has annexed Grequaland East, Adam Hok's territory,, to the British territories. Hok is pensioned on a salary of £1 ,000 a year. 15 esistanc c from Pond's tribe is anticipated. They are mustering 2,000 warriors. Many haf c been appre-, hended.
Eecenfr advices from the Cape report that the Trans Yaal goldfields have created extraordinary excitement in the colony. There is a great rush of diggers, and #old and nuggets have reached Cape Town.
The Lord, Chamberlain has issued circulars to the managers of theatres, condemning improper dances and dresses. Theatres were induced to stop those abuses.
The action against Vanity Fair, brought by the lessee at St. James" Theatre, for libel in describing the performance of Vert-Vert as indecent and without merit, resulted in a veidict for defendant. ;
The directors' of the European Fire and Gas Company, have been committed for trial on charges of conspiracy to defraud the Stock Exchange. The company has been ordered to be wound up. It has been resolved to widen London Bridge by providing new foot pavements on either side at a cost of £40,000,
A parliamentary bill is in preparation for the purchase "of the interests of all gas companies within the metropolitan area. The purchase mone^ to be provided by the creation of irredeemable consolidated stock with a small annual sinking fund.
A court-martial has been held on Peter Comrie. second staff surgeon of HM.S. Basilisk, tor insubordinate conduct. Three charges of it were proved, and the accused was sentenced to forfeit three years' seniority, and to be discharged from H.M.S. Basilisk.
The Chief Surveyor of Lloyd's has issued an elaborate report relative to the dismasting of several new iron soiling ships. Of 12 vessels affected, seven were bound for Australia, and others for various Eastern ports. Overmasting and injudicious stowage are pronounced as the chief cause of disasters.
Commodore Goodenough has receired the thanks of the Colonial dffice for his action in connection with the cession of Fiji. >
