The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi.` TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1875.

The death of His Honor the Superintendent took place at an early hour this, morning, after a very brief illness. This unexpected event will probably cause some delay in the proclamation of Ohinemuri as a goldfield. By virtue of the Constitution Act the Speaker of the Provincial Council Jbecomes Acting Superintendent, but he cannot exercise any of the |Governor's delegated powers, which must be specially relegated to some person by the GrovernorinCouncil, and duly gazetted. Gt. M. O'Borke, Esq., will therefore assume the office of Superintendent, but it is just possible the Government may advise the delegation of the Governor's powers Tinder the Goldfields Act of 1866, for administering the Ohinemuri field, to some special Commissioner who would be required to be. on the ground. It is much to be deplored that Mr Williaraaon has not been permitted to see the consummation of a work in which he took great interest, and for which he has labored so long, namely, the opening of Ohinemuri. His death is to be deplored for many other reasons. Wedded to Provincial institutions, it would have been satisfactory to see the old veteran fighting for the cause to the bitter end. His death will be a great blow to provincialists jand to Provincialism. The well-known jform and sonorous voice will be missed from [the halls of the Assembly at Wellington, [and the advocacy of Provincialism will be found to have sustained a great loss when the next Assembly meets. In the Province of Auckland it will be difficult find a man to. succeed Mr Williamson, [who will fight as he would have fought [in the declining years of Provincialism.
