ALARM. OF FIRE.
At about half-past; 12 o'clock this morning an alarm of fire occurred, though the fire-bell did ,hot ring. Persons were seen rushing from Butt's corner in great haste, the major part of them being Maoris. It turned out that the excitement was caused by a volume of thick smoke from the chimney of the Pembroke Hotel. < A great crowd of persons, was at once 'collected, and the Shortland Fire Brigade turned but with promptitude, but their willing services were not, fortunately, required, as the efforts of those belonging to the house had been-productive of extinguishing the fire, in the chimney. We heard a very ungracious remark <made when Superintendent Bull came up with one of the Brigade's buckets. It was to the effect that there was nothing to do, and that he could take away his bucket. Our Volunteer Fire Brigades should always be treated with the utmost civility and respect, and every encouragement should be given to their gratuitous and generous efforts. Supposing a fire has been
extinguished, the desire of anybody, from motives best known to themselves, to make light of it should never lead them to requite the promptitude of these men with incivility, which in all probability might have the effect of damping their ardour.
