VOLUNTEERS RECEPTION.

The Volunteer Reception Committee met yesterday afternoon. The attendance was not so full as could be desired. Out of a committee of about twenty-five there were present only, Major Cooper (in the chair), Messrs Grant, Brassey, Dignan, Allom, McCullpugh, Walker,, Fraser, Taipari, and the Secretary. '

There were very few subscription lists handed in, and altogether the results so far were not considered encouraging. A subcommittee, consisting of Messrs Ajiom, Dignanj Brassey, Mcpulloiigh and Grant was appointed to make arrangements as to the ball, and repfbrt progredi on Monday next. \ V| ' In the meantime we. think it would be j as well to say that the Committee need assistance from the ladies. If they take the matter up it must be successful, and to those who have prepared their balldresses, it might be s,a well to intimate that unless the funds come in more freely,, their direct presence and consequently their dresses will not be required. , It should be remembered that the \ Committee cannot be, expected to take the responsibility * which the ! Thames public have already incurred. At a public meeting it was re* solved there should be a ball and supper. The public are therefore responsible for that which they have appointed a committee > to carry out, anc. if the price of the ball tickets ia to be brought within the reach of those who may be induced th attend, it is absolutely essential that the proceeds of such tickets! s 1 ould be largely supplemented by publics subscriptions..
