Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. SATURDAY, JANUARY 16, 1875.

Ebfbbbikg to the letter of " Common Sense," which appeared in our yesterday's issue, we are inclined to think that a mistake has been made in connection with educational mat ters; or rather that the action of those who have interested themselves most in procuring the establishment of a " superior school" requires some explanation, which we are not prepared to give, but which we should much like to hear We remember a public meeting being called, at which it. was almost unanimously agreed to request the Board of Education to form a High School aft the. Thames. A sub-committee was appointed, if we remember rightly, to lay the result of the- meeting before the Central Board; which was done; but beyond a newspaper report of the letter having been received, we are not aware of any further communication having been held between the representatives of] the public assembled at the meeting and the Boaid of Education. It appears, however, th at some gentlemen have assumed that they represent public feeling on the matter, and, having abandoned the projectof a High School, the consent of the Education Board has been obtained to opening a common school as a superior school under the Act. Kow, as it is well known that the provision made for commoni v schools in tlie district, and the teaching power actually required have been quite inadequate to meet the wants of t: the population, some explanation should be afforded by those who have taken the matter in hand lately as to the reasons which, actuated them in the course they have adopted. As the matter stands at present it is more than suspected that the consent of the Board of Education to turning a common school in'o a superior has been obtained by the same kind of back-stair influence as that was exerted to induce the Board to amalgamate the feur school districts without ever consulting the school committees or the public; which placed the Board in the ridiculous position of having to cancel its own proclamation as soon as issued.
