ACADEMY OF. MUSIC.
Miss May Howard performed for the second and last time in the Academy last evening, in the .character of Lady Teazle and Caraille. Her conception of the former was admirable, and went farther to show that this lady is a proficient actress, with all the accomplishments which that term should embrace in its meaning. In scenes from " CamilJe," Miss Howard was very effective, pourtraying the wretched despair of the selfsacrificing Camille so smypathetically as to call for genuine plaudits from the audience. Mr Collier as Armand also distinguished himself in the third act. His idea of Armand's passion on being left by Camille to the, ravages of a broken heart was very good. Though modern hearts are not so easily broken, a man who is possessed of so. much heart as to break is looked upon* as rather superior to common humanity ; and therefore when Mr {Jollier gave a pretty truthful delineation of the condition which a man might he supposed to be in under such damaging circumstances, he evoked admiration from the house. It is g-eatly to be regretted that Miss May iiad not a more powerful corni any during her short stay.. The.most shining light of the stage will scarcely appear to proper advantage without adequate support; and there are few persons who care for selections from particular dramas, without beginning or end, and the necessary accompanying effects. Miss-May Howard proceeds on a tour through the Southern provinces.
