The Jason, from London to Sydney, was badly injured by fire, and was towed back to the Victoria Docks. On the 9th the fire broke out again .on board the ship Jason. As she "was being towed back to the docks it was found necessary, to scuttle her.

The wool sales closed with increasing weakness. Quotations show a decline compared with September rate of Id to 3d. Faulty wools showed the heaviest fall. Sound fleeces are very scarce, and comparatively firm. The new clip for Great Britain commando! better prices. 22,000 bales exported, 10,000 old stock offerd. and 8,000 withdrawn. The produce telegram oi New Zealand Co., dated London, Dec. Bth, says: "Wool sales closed flatly—nearly all descriptions declined, from l^d to 2d. Sales comprised about 85,000 bales. 22,000 taken for export; 4000 withdrawn. During a part of the sales a good many second-hand parcels were offered. The prospects of the next sales are not so good. Tallow: The public sales of Australian comprised 4000 casks mutton at 445; beef, 435. Leather, best sides fetched a farthing advance on previous rates; others unchanged. Wheat market quiet." Count Arnim has been arrested on a charge of retaining possession of papers relating to the German embassy in Paris, and which is alleged to belong to the archives of the nation. He is being placed upon trial. He took preliminary objection to the jurisdiction of the Court before which he was summoned, but the objection was overruled. The indictment was read, charging him with being guilty of embezzling State documents. Several witnesses were examined. The case is not yet finished. The Suez mail arrived from Adelaide on the 11th.
