BOROUGH COUNCIL ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber to-day at noon. Present—His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Councillors Anthony, Butt, Brown, Ehrenfried, Renshaw, Rowe, Macnab, and Wilson.

ACCOUNTS. His Worship said the first business would be to pass the accounts, a copy of which Councillors bad'before them. Cr. Butt said as the auditors had certified to the accounts, he would more that they be passed. Cr. Macnab seconded the proposition, which was carried. ELECIION OF MI.TOE. The Mayor said the next business before the Council was the election of Mayor for the ensuing term. Cr. Renshaw said he had great pleasure in proposing that Cr. William Davies be reelected, and in doing so he briefly gave his reasons; which were that the Mayor had not had a full term of office; and it would be but a confirmation of the feeling of respect they had for him when they first put him into office to reelect him, so as to give him a full term* He did not approve of any one looking upon and office as a right, or electing any one to such an office for a number of times; but Mr Davies had not had a full term, aud his duties had been very-arduous. So he (Cr. Renshaw) "had much pleasure in proposing that Cr. Davies be reelected. Cr. Macnab seconded. The first Mayor had a great.deal to do, and the working of the Municipality had depended -xarj^Litvirclx upon the - May or. He concurred in what Cr. Renshaw had said regarding anyone looking at the office as a right, but under, the present circumstances he thought the re-election of Cr. Davis would be judicious. There being no other proposition Mayor Davis put the motion, and it was carried unanimously. The Mayor returned thanks. He said he had hitherto endeavoured to do his duty faithfully, and would do so in the future. Speechmaking was but a poor sub-" stitute for work. He was thankful for the support accorded to him by councillors in the past. He was conscious of shortcomings, and he was grateful for the forbearance shown by the Council. He would again thank them for the honor done, and .would continue to devote his best energes to the work appertaining to his office.

NEXT MEETING. . The.Mayor said it would be advisable to call a special meeting next week as the regular meeting time would be Christmas Eve. . Councillors concurred, and Wednesday next was fixed for the meeting. The Council adjourned. '"'■'■. [At the invitation of the Mayor, Councillors adjourned to the Governor Bowen Hotel, where refreshments were served and "The Health cf the Mayor" was drunk, with -congratulations on his re-election^]
