COLONIAL PRIZE FIRING.

QUALIFICATION CONTEST

Firing to qualify for the position, of representatives of the district in the forthcoming inter-provincial matches took place yesterday, with the most favorable results, though the weather was anything but kind. Eighteen men were chosen by their execution in the preliminary competition, and, out of these, sixteen qualified, which—when it is understood that the weather was excessively bad in the latter part of the day, and that the qualification number is this year three points higher than it has been previously —must be looked upon as calliug for more than ordinary congratulation. .The firing was superintended by Major Cooper, and Lieutenant Gavin (Thames Naval Brigade) was occupied in charge of the mantlets. As will be seen, some splendid firing has been made, the Naval Brigade showing up well on the list. Seaman Clarke made a score of 97, and we have no doubt but for the murky weather would bave reached a score considerably above that. As it is, this is the highest score that has been made in any of the northern provinces, so faraß we can recollect, Wanganui was the only JNotthern District which approached it, with; a scores of 96, but in Portobello, Dunedin, a similar score (97) was made. The following are the totals annexed to each name : — Clarke ... ■-.... 97 Gordon .. .... 94 Campbell ... ... 93 Hoskins .;. ... 89 McLean ... ... 88 Sykes ... ... 88 Armstrong ... ... 87 Grant ... ... 87 McLeod ... ... 87 Murray ... ... 87 Brown ... ... 86 McKee ... ... 86 Dey ... ... 84 Grundy ... ... 84 Fenton ... ... 83
