EXTRAORDINARY AND HEROIC RESCUE.
Aninstanceof real heroism has occurred near here, the particulars of which I append :—" A Mt G. E. Ellis was coming up the river in charge of a lot of sheep belonging to Mr A. G. Jones, of Waega Wagga. They had to cross the Boganbillon Creek, which was running with great rapidity, and which is at all times dangerous. After waiting for some days Mr Ellis, in company with a teamster named Davis (who was also detained by the state of the creek), agreed to go and see what could be done in the way of making a bridge. To dothis they had to swim the creek on horseback, which they aafely accomplished. On returning .Davis was the first to go in, and he again crossed safely; but on reaching the, baak and looking round, he saw Ellis struggling in the water and his horse coming ashore without him. Without a moment's hesitation he leaped into the deep and rapid current, and with some difficulty got to the drowning man, but was clutched with such a vice-like grasp that they both went under the water at once. After a struggle, Davis freed himself, and made for the shore where he tore off his clothes, and again jumped in to the rescue, .fust as the form of Ellis was disappearing he reached him, and clutched him by the hair of his head, but almost as exhausted as the man he was trying to save; Seem? a projecting log in the stream he made for it, and for a minute rested, still holding the now almost lifeless body of poor Ellis. After a short respite he again struck out, and succeeded in landing hi* burden on the bank with much difficulty. Ellis was to all appearance dead, *nd many men would have left him as such. Not so Davis. He at once stripped the motionless form on a bank of hot sand, and for an hour ceaselessly rubbed away. He was at length rewarded by signs of returning consciousness, and never left his man till he had conveyed him to his camp, three miles away. Davis is a native of New South "Wales, and resides with hi* widowed mother at Parkes."—Forbes correspondent Sydney Morning Herald.
