VISIT OF SIR DONALD M'LEAN.
NATIVE MEETING.
A considerable number of Maoriea assembled at the residence of Mr. W. H. Taipavi, Shortlaud, this morning to meet Sir Donald McLean. Of the Natives there were ahout a hundred, including Te Hira, Te Moananui, Rapana, Rewai, Hotereni Taipari, W. 11. Taipari, Rikapaka, Hopehana, Ngatai* Pineha Whakakohe and others of more or less note. When Sir Donald arrived, accompanied by- Mr James Mackay, junior, and Mr E. W. Puckey, he was received with welcomes by the Natives, aud after the usual salutations some of the principal chiefs made congratulatory and complimentary speeches, which were; replied to by Sir Donald McLean. Nobusinesswas touched further than to arrange that the korero about Ohinemuri should take place at Butt's American Theatre to-morrow, commencing at 10 o'clock. After the proceedings had closed—they lasted but a short time—Sir Donald McLean and others were entertained at dinner at Mr Taipari's, where a considerable time was spent in a general conversation about affairs affecting the natives and the district. The talk was of course in Maori.
