The Cyphrenes has arrived. She left 'Frisco on November 10th, three days behind her time, caused by a long passage made by the Atlantic boat. Encountered terrific gales for three days between 'Frisco and Honolulu. Left the latter place on the 22nd; had dirty weather and head seas since. Brings a large cargo, and4o passengers for Australia, and the following for New Zealand:—Mrs Veal and family; Rev. Dr Atcliff, Rev. A. R. Tomlinson, Rev. Dr-Copland (forOtago). Messrs Hoare, Robert Graham, and 20 in the steerage. At the Lord Mayor's banauet, Mr Dißraeli referred to the annexation of Fiji as a proof that the Government would maintain the national colonial policy. ' The striking West Yorkshire colliers have resumed work, pending arbitration. Extensive lock-out in Lincolnshire is threatened, the farmers insisting on a reduction of three shillings a week in the wages of farm hands. A terrible cyclone at Bengal caused the loss of 2000 lives and many wrecks. The marriage between Princess Thyra of Denmark and the King of Hannover is reported to be broken off. An Imperial (German) decree has established a representative assembly for Alsace and Lorraine. 1500 persons are sick with typhoid fever at Darwin, Lancaster, being more than one sixteenth of the entire population. ; The first attempt of the Prussian Government to have priests elected by congregations failed, the congregations refusing. In the pressure at the Lord Mayor's Show, several persons were killed and injured. The English Agricultural Laborers' Union adopted a proposal submitted by a Mississippi deputation to, deport five million laborers to the States. Extensive immigration is going on and creating alarm in Great Britain. The famine in Samaria is of a most desolating character, causing great ravages. John Laird, the noted shipbuilder, is dead. The Municipality of Naples propose to grant Garibaldi six thousand dollars annually. r A conflagration at Giffis, Asiatic Russia, great loss cf life and property, y The Governor of. Syria is instructed to suppress all Protestant schools.
