RESIDENT MAGISTRATR'S COURT

THIS DAT.

(Before W. Fbasbb, Esq., 8.M.)

LABCENY FBOM A DWEUIKfI.

James Bird (a small b»y, apparently about seven years of age) was charged that he did on the 9th December, 1874,, from the dwelling-house of Peter Edwards, situate near to Pollen-street, Grahamstown, feloniously steal, take and carry away one silver Geneva watch and mohair guard, value £2, the property of Peter Edwards. On. being asked if he stole the watch, the juvenile said he did not. Mr. Bullen said the boy's plea was that he got the watch from another boy, but he couldn't give his name or any description of him. He planted the watchburied it, and it had been found. The boy's parents were respectable people. The father said the lad had not been going to any school lately. He was learning nothing at the Thames school, and he took him away to send him to the Waiotahi with his sisters. ' i Mr Bullen said the difficulty was what to do with such children. The one before the Court was not eight years of age. There were frequent complaints of tho mischievous character of lads of a similar age to defendant. A few dajs ago a number of them pelted Dr Payne's horse until the animal broke loose from where it was tied and bolted. His Worship thought a good flogging would do the lad good, and advised the father to send him to school. He would order the defendant into confinement for ten hours, and to be once privately whipped. The father had better come for him in the evening. ASSAULT. Peter Beauford was summonsed for assaulted one Michael Conroy. Mr Miller said he was informed the complainant did not intend to offer any evidence in the case. 40: There was no, appearance olyeither party and the case was struck out/ Court adjourned.
