Serious Accident.
An accident of a dreadful character for the unfortunate victim happened at the Hauraki (Gibbon's) saw mills this morning at 11 o'clock. The man, whose name is John George Newlan, was working for a Mr Macdonnell, who has a contract for cutting timber at the mills. The details simply, and in brief are these. Newlan was putting a piece of 4 x 3 scantling through the circular saw having been fleeched.. The* wood rose on the bench as it was in motion, and Newlan placed his hand (the right) on the wood to press it down, and his hand was carried into the teeth of the saw 5 whicji "cut off three of the fingers and the thumb, leaving the poor fellow only the little finger on his right hand. He was brought with all possible despatch to Shortland, and to the hospital, where he received overy attention from the Hospital Surgeon and Mr Aitken. Fortunately it was not found necessary to amputate the wrists Newlan is a fine hearty young man, and the loss he has sustained will be severely felt.
