The ship Udstone, from Melbourne for Calcutta, with 150 horses, went ashore. All the horses were suffocated, being battened down in the hold. Colombo, October 24,
Governor Gregory opened the Legislative Council at Ceylon on October 14. The revenue for the past year is the largest known, amounting to £1,300j000. Coffee continues to rule at very high prices. Sir — Hayno, ex-Indian official, is the new Governor of Mauritius, and is very highly spoken of. There is a rumour that Lord Wharncliffe succeeds Lord,JS"orthbropk as Viceroy next year. It is aot believed in India. The Viceroy has recovered from ah attack of fever. The prospects df the crop are now very good. The Famine Belief operations close at the end of October., Floods occurred in some districts. Only 29 deaths altogether are attributed to famine in Bombay. ■ The Hydrabad State [Railway opened with grand festivities.HA rocket mortar burst; three natives were killed and five severely wounded, causing several amputations. One native's head was blown clean off.
