There was a successful race meeting last night, and the meeting elected a committee for the Goromandel New Year races—confined to local horses.
The Union Beach have discharged nine hands in consequence of putting down the new level by contract and suspending stoping till the drive is further ahead.
Batjen's claim at the Waikoromiko is a great success. The large leader is turning out stone showing blotches of gold. The Tokatea sent down four hundredweight of specimens for crushing at the Whakaroa battery. Tatjeanga, This day. Another meeting re opening of the Mechanics' Institute on Sundays was held last night, and decided by a majority of one to few (sic). Much feeling was shewn on the subject, and another meeting is desired by the opponents of measures.
Albert Fisher, publican, Ohinemutu, has had his license cancelled for serving the drunken native woman Arihia.
