The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1874.

The people of Onekunga have shown their appreciation of Mr. O'Eorke's self-abne-gation by presenting him with, a service of plate, and Mr. O'Borke in reply has stated that the step he took in retiring from the Ministry was not taken huriedly, or on the impulse of the moment, but after due consideration. We can only repeat what we stated some time ago, that Mr. O'Borke was singularly unfortunate in fixing upon a time to announce his severance from the Ministry. As representative of Onehunga he was at liberty to act as he did, but when he accepted a portfolio in the Ministry of the day he was to a certain extent the servant of the Colony, and amenable to a course of procedure which does not govern the actions of private members. However gruat the personal respect for Mr. O'Rorke, the tenor of his reply to the Onehunga constituency will not remove the impression from the minds of many that he acted precipitately and irregularly in retiring from the Ministry as he did; and the adulation of the good folks of Onehunga will not assist in putting any other complexion on the matter. As the longtried representative of Onehunga, Mr. O'Bprke h*s doubtless earned the gratitude oF his constituents; but none except the ultra-provincialist will acknowledge the propriety of a presentation for an act which, however suggestive of self-denial, cannot but be condemned by all who like to see things done decently and in order.
