RACE MEETING.
A meeting of gentlemen interested in getting up races for the Thames during the Christmas holidays was held in the Governor Bowen Hotel last evening. There was a fair attendance, the Mayor presiding.
The Chairman stated that he had been induced to take an interest in the meeting in order that amusement might be provided for people here instead of going to Auckland at the coming holidays. After some considerable discussion, in which the tone of the meeting appeared to favor the idea of holding the sports at Parawai, it was resolved to appoint a committee of the Mayor, Messrs. Wilson, Anthony, Quint, Young,]!. Brown, Williams, McGowan, Quinliyan, Vaughan and W. Eobinson, with power to add to their number, to take steps for securing the success of the movement.
A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs. Brown, Young, Robinson and McCullough was subsequently appointed to take the preliminary steps necessary. Before the close of the meeting the following gentlemen were added to the committee :—Captain Butt, Messrs. Macnab, McCullough, F. Wells, H. Eawden, J. Cook, E. Cook, H. E. Jones and Captain Souter.
