AN EXPLANATION.
At one of the meetings of the Hospital Committee, during the discussion of the Sub-Committee's report and the proceedings that followed, Mr. E. K. Tyler was taunted with having been horsewhipped by a lady in the streets, or something of the kind, which was duly reported in our colu'ms. In explanation of this matter we have "oeen requested to publish the following letter :—
Westport, 17th October, 1874—Sir,— In reply to your request to be furnished with some official record of a case heard before me in which a woman named Haynes was charged with assaulting you, I beg to state for your information the following facts :—ln the month of January, 1868, a woman whose name appears as Mrs. Haynes, alias Chilcot, was charged by you with an assault, and application was further made by you that the defendant might be bound over to keep the peace. Evidence was taken on the Bth and 11th of January, and the defendant was fined £10 far the assault, and was further required to give sureties of the peace for six months, herself in the sum of £40, and two others of £20. For your further information I send you notes of evidence taken at the time, and. am, sir, yours obediently, Joseph Giles, Resident Magistrate.—Edward King Tyler, Esq., Solicitor, Grahamstown, Thames, Auckland.
From the " notes of evidence referred to in the letter we find that the woman went to Mr. Tyler's office and said, " Three times in Court you alluded to me in a manner you ought not 10. lam going to horsewhip you. I don't care for the consequences. I have plenty of money.. £200." She then struck Mr. Tyler with a supple-jack. Subsequently the woman threatened Mr. Tyler at ,the bar of the Ship Inn, and Mr. Tyler, prosecuted her with the result stateddn Dr. Giles' letter.
