Fire in Auckland.
Block of Buildings Destroyed*
Auckland, -This day. A fire occurred at four o'clock this morning, and a block of buildings were burned down at the junctiori'of Wakefieldstreet with Queen and Rutlaud-Btreets. It broke out in Kemslcy's earthenware shop. ,Thr«e Small dwelling houses in Rutland-street rapidly caught, the inmates barely " escaping in their night dresses. The Char)emont Hotel, a brick building in Wakefield-street, next caught, and rapidly.succumbed. There was a great scarcity of water, which rendered the efforts of the Fire Brigade unavailing. A, two-storey building, : occupied by Woodward, baker,,afidia dressmaker, and and' an adjoining building, occupied by Saridalls, butcher, both of wood, then caught. By this time a copious supply of water was procured, and although the fire had obtained a strong hold on the buildings > it was extinguished through the efforts of the brigade. The insurances so far as ascertained . are—Kemsley, stock and furniture, £650, Victoria Company; Charlemont Hotel, £600, Norwich Union; Sandall, £250, National. ..' .',•'.,.. A good deal of property was earned out. The fire originated in a shed at the rear of EJerasley's premises. He was burnt out a year ago at:Riverhead.
