The Tauranga natives would seem disposed to appear again in the character of obstructionists. The telegram from our. own correspondent published in yesterday's issue indicates that the proposed road from Tauranga to Cambridge does not find favor in the eyes of these gentry, a discussion between friendlies and disaffected ( natives having resulted in an adverse decision. The place of meeting— Kaimai, on the dividing range between the Tauranga and Waikato districts — bears a reputation for being auriferous, and we believe it has been more or less prospected since 1866:67, at which time it was the scene of active warfare between the natives and colonial forces. It may be that the character of the district for being auriferous has something to do with the objection of the natives to the formation of the road; or it may be the old conservatism again cropping up. The confiscation boundary is very near to Kaimai so that it will not be wise for the natives to cairy their objections too far. Moreover, although there is no distinct promise from the Government to make the road, they stand committed to the survey—a preliminary step towards completing a work which is much desired. Perhaps a little mediation may be successful in removing the difficulty which has been raised; which should, at any cost, be met with firmness on the part of the Government, or else the disaffected.ones may extend their objections, and in the end create a serious difficulty .
