The Hon. Mr. Vogel addressed his constituents of Auckland City East in the Choral Hall last night. From the telegraphic account published in the columns of our contemporary Mr. Vogel appears to hare treated his audience —a very large one—rather cavalierly, leaving the hall in company with the chairman of the; meeting (Mr. Thomas Russell) before the proceedings had terminated. We can Well understand that neither Mr. Vogel nor Mr. Thomas Russell would care to stay and listen to the blatant oration of Mr. W. L. Sees, whose harangues partake too much of the ad captandum vulgus. With more ability than, Mr. Rees seems to have assumed the mantle of, Citizen Staines ; for wherever there is a mob to address there is the parsonlawyer to be found. The abrupt departure of Mr. Vogel and Mr. Russell from the hall when Mr. Rees commenced to. speak can be understood; and appreciated, although if the proceedings had taken any other direction than that given to them by Mr. Rees —even if an. elector of City East had gone on to the platform to propose an adverse vote* we should imagine the Premier would hare remained to face
it out, little as an expression of opinion from that meeting would have indicated the feeling of the electors of City East. The Auckland morning journals will probably contain a full rereport of the proceedings, which will enable us to form a better idea of the Premier's speech than the digest* published.
