MUNICIPAL ELECTION.

THE POLLING.

To day the polling for the election of three members to the Borough Council, in room of three retiring, took place at the Council Chambers, Queen-street. As our readers lihow ihcre were six candidates tlio three retiring councillors and three others. A good deal more excitement— or perhaps it would bo more correct to sayjjjhllarit}'-—was evinced throughout the^y than might have been expected. The^Cbuncil Chambers and vicinity presented a complete metamorphosis, being crowded with a busy, interested throng of people, some bona fide electors and others possessing no qualification save those which nature gave them; but all prepared, nevertheless, to take an eager part; in the outside show, and likewise in the consumption of cheese and bread, of which there was a most unlimited supply. An unfortunate occurrence is related in connection with the polling for 'one of tho candidate.*. It appears that s>aid candidate's active supporters had possessed themselves of certain ingenious Natives to swell the votes of the candidates in whose interest they acted. The Natives were brought down in a bus, treated as under tine circumstances such men should be treated. And now the ingenuity of the bare legged barbarians will beunderstood when it is told that the startling intelligence was discovered that tho barbarians aforesaid had no votes to give away. This was mortifying. There was a good deal of good hard work done by the supporters of the several candidates, and from the first a deeper interest was taken in the election than might reasonably have been expected. The poll closes at four o'clock.
