THE VANGUARD.

The contractors are progressing most favourably in sinking the shaft, which still continues in the same soft friable country that the first hundred feet went through ; I was rather surprised at this, as I expected to find that by this time, a harder class.of ground wouldiiave been met with. From the surface, not from the brace, the shaft is now down one hundred and thirly-fire feet, and quite dry, no reef having been met with, nor was one expected. The shaft is a really sound one; but one thing I could but notice; in the ladder compartment there are no ladders ; now, from brace to bottom, the men are working at a depth, as near as I can guess, of 150 feet trom surface ; and when a cpmpartrcent is made specially in the shaffc.for ladders, why not put them ? They cost but little, and the men work with so much greater confidence. The shareholders of the company have been singularly fortunate in their choice of a site for the shaft.
