BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the Council to confirm Bye-law No. 2 was held in the Chambers last evening. The meeting had been adjourned from last regular meeting night. There were present Crs, Xilgour, Anthony, Buett, Wilson, Brown, and Ehrenfried. Cr. Kilgour was voted to the chair. The clerk read the minutes of the previous special meeting. tome discussion arose as to whether the confirmation of the minutes as read should not be deferred, pending the reelection of members. It was ultimately ' , agreed to do so nt that meeting; and the minutes were confirmed accordingly. , BEQULAB MEETING. Minutes of last meeting were, read; also letters sent since last meeting. COBKESPONDENCB. A letter was read from the,Sarawai District Board, with reference twroie approach t« the Cemetery, and urgiag xlpon the Council to take some s.teps for obtaining the grant promised by the Government. Mr. Brown moved that the clerk be instructed to write to the Superintendent, again making inquiries as to the £500 grant. A letter was received from the Town Clerk's of several Municipal Corporations regarding the petitions for additional power in securing an increase of Municipal revenue. '
One from Mr. J. Jerris was again* re- ] ceived regarding tho footpath ixx Pa-hau-street, and complaining that one of the Councillors had ridden over the said footpath, much to the footpath's injury and destruction; and furthermore that he (thp complainant) has not been treated in a gentlemanly manner when he had remonstrated thereupon. The letter was received. WAIO-KABAItA EOAD. A lettpr was read from the Queen of May Company asking how much the cost of this road would be. The engineer had not beenjable to prepare the estimate, as the arrangement with Mr. Graham had only just been completed. It was ultimately proposed that tenders should be called for so soon as the com* - panics guaranteed to pay all costs above ' £300. The proposition was carried. Mr. Brown proposed that the Town Clerk, should bo instructed to communicate with the Queen <5f the May Company stating that the companies interested must come to some decided understanding between themselres. DANGEBOtXS GOODS ACT. A communication from the A.C. office was read, notifying that cases under the above Act had been brought before the Court. WATEB fcACB. , The report of the Engineer on the proposed waterrace, between Boundary Creek "" and the Imperial Crown Battery, was read. It had been referred from the Warden's Office to the Borough Council. Mr. Brown said the stream of water which it was proposed to carry along was very valuable, and was of great importance. The proposed right would take the water from the inhabitants in the summer time. , He . proposed that the matter'be referred to the Works Committee to report upon at next meeting. FIBE BRIGADE. The committee appointed to confer with the respective Fire Brigades, sent in their , report, which was read. The accounts I contained in the report were passed. ' GBBY-STBBBr. The report of the Borough Engineer regarding the Grey-street culvert was read. \ Mr. Brown moved that all now contracts be deferred. Mr. Ehrenfried [moved as. an amendment that the proposed culvert be constructed.
I The amendment was carried. I KBBOBENE STOKE. ! The report of the Kerosene Committee | was read, recommending thit application , should be made to the. Gorerament for a 1 site on the southern side of Richmond- " street. ■;)?"■* " The consideration of the''report was allowed to stand over for a week. ACCOUNTS. The report of the Finance. Committee was read; and the accounts for the month, amounting to £413 13s Id, were passed for payment. ' FOBEMAN OF WOBKS. ' The report of the Foreman of Works was read and adopted. TEAMWATS BILK. The clerk laid on the table a copy of the Tramways Bill passed in the General Assembly, and it was decided to apply to' Wellington for a number of copies of the Bill. , fubthke Accoxnrrs. Certain accounts due by the Council to \ contractors, and certified to by the Borough Engineer, were put in. The accounts amounted in all to £697 18s 6d, and were passed for paymenfton tfee motion of Cr. Butt. . ,-y- .■-.■ UPPBB ALBEBT-STBEET. The clerk stated that the contract for the erection of a hand-rail on the fide of Upper Albert-street, had been accepted by the Works Committee. It. appeared that from the dangerous nature of the country through which this road runs, an accident has occurred lately which ended in most fatal results, and it was decided to approve of the action of the Works i Committee. 1 POUND-KEEFEE. 1 The Clerk stated that the appointment of the pound-keeper had been written out, and sent to Auckland to be stamped. r FIBK PLUG/ CASINGS. The question of plus casings was the next subject brought before the Council. Mr. Ehrenfried said he had examined the casings in Grahamstown, and found them to be disgraceful specimens of such work. If they they were -worth jj £1 a piece the offer of Mr. Thackeray to construct strnceable ones at £1 lOt
tu reasonable. . The Council decided to leave this question to tho decision of the Mayor. NOTICE OF MOTION. Cr. Brown asked leave to postpone the notice of motion which he had intended to propoio at last meeting, with reference to the operation of the Fire-rate Act.
