Thb resignation of the Governorship of New Zealand by His Excellency Sir James Fergusson—information of which was conveyed to us. yesterday by telegram via Hokitika—will be a surprise. No reason i» asiigaed for the step, but it is possible that Sir James has been actuated thereto by a desire to take part in the politics of the Home country. He has previously sat in the House of Commons as member for Ayrshire, and has also been in office. During his governorship of South Australia, Sir James was elected for Ayrshire, and it is quite on the cards that the resignation has been resolved upon limply from a desire to assume his former position in English politics—a position more i» accord with the inclinations of one who has shown considerable capacity for administration than the post of Governor of a colony. under responsible government. [The explanation made by the Premier in the House confirms our view of the reasons for Sir Jamea Fergusson's resignation.]
