LABCENY.
John Dunoran was brought up on remand from yesterday on a charge of stealing a pair of rowlocks the property of John Bell.
Mr. Bullen said his His Worship would tee by the charge sheet that he had preferred another charge aga nst accused, namely, that of being a neglected child, and being the associate of thieres, and would ask leave to withdraw the first charge.
Tbv accused pleaded not guilty to being a neglected child, or a vagrant. Detective Brennan said he had known the accused lad for three years; be had been convicted oi larceny. There had been a person convicted of habitual drunkenness, staying m the same place as the accused; he ws always smokinganda keeping bad company. His v\ orsh.p said that the boy was so young he did not want to send him to gaol amongst thieves, but he. had been imprisoned and flogg«d |^t seemed to do him no good. He would now sentence him to three years in the industrial school in Auckland; that was the only chance it seemed there was left to save him from utter ruin. In answer to the question as to what religion he lad should be brought up, the mother replied to the Konian Catholic.
Mr. Sub-Inspector Bullen asked His Worship to entertain the question as to the liability of the parents to contribute to the maintenance of the boy during his confinement.
T'te mother said she would contribute as the father continued in work. , /,
