THE QUEEN OF BEAUTY.
This mine is now employing 83 head of stamps in the reduction of their stuff — 30 at the Kuranui, 10 at the Mariukau, 20 of their own, and #3 at Bull's battery; and (out of a mine owned by half-a-dozen men) ■with all this crushing power the j Jioppers remain over full, the reefs conTmuing undimimshed in size. No. 2, as ' it is called, is about eight feet thick, easily worked, and all the stuff sent to the mill; it is fully that thickness going towards the City of London end of the drive. The Queen of Beauty is now eighty feet from the City boundary, and carrying good gold. On the Ho. 1 reef less work as been' done, still it has been driven on for 75 feet each way from the shaft. This lode is about four feet thick, also giving good gold returns towards the City of London, yet a long way from that boundary. It is estimated that the next level, when started, will give 18 months' work. The mine and batteries employ 80 men, not including carters, splitters, or any others indirectly employed. One of the shareholders informed me that his share originally cost him £2, and that he had never paid one shilling in the shape of calls, as it had always cleared, itself, besides the splendid dividends his share has drawn. I don't suppose £4000 would buy him out. So much for one of our Thames mines.
