The following petition to the House of .Representatives has been in course of signature during the last few days. Tiie petition explains itself. It has already had one hundred names attached, comprising about thirty engineers :— To the Honorable the Members of the House of Representatives of New Zealand in session assembled. The humble .petition of the'^'undersigned engineers and engine drivers resident and employed on the" Thames' Gbldfield respectfully praye£h—That' in the bill which is now bofore your Honorable House for the prevention of accidents andregulation of mines, it may be deemed l advisable to regulate the working hours*li of those employed amongst • machinery. We respectfully urge upon your attention—First •. That we consider it iiidispen.-. sably,necessary • for (he prevention of accidents that . those employed amongst machinery should bo guarded as much as possible from tlie Ihligue and exhaustion consequent on long hours ; owing to the monotony and the nature of our work" we are especially liable to this. Secondly— In order thr.t the responsibility which devolves on each of us may be faithfully and efficiently discharged, we respectfully pray that in the bill which is now before your Honorable House a special clause be inserted making our ivorking day eight hours. - > We therefore trust your Honorable House will, on careful consideration, sec fit to grant our request, and your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
