THE NONPAREIL.
The Nonpareil Company seem to be making a vigorous renewal of work in their mine under the management of Mr. S. Hunter, who is cleaning out a crosscut drive from the adit level, the drive bearing towards the Italian Company's ground. This cross-cut will be continued with a view of opening up a bl®ck of ground supposed to be left solid on the No. 1 reef, that there are good reasons for supposing will be payable forty feet above the adit level. Work is being carried on at the junction of Nos. 1 and 2 reefs, a rise having been put up 70 feet, and a stope has been'started on a reef about 2 feet thick. »The appearance of the stone is most promising for gold bearing, and gold was frequently seen during the time the rise was being put up. It is the company's intention, while the block is being worked out, to repair the engine shaft and sink for another level, to prove reefs at a greater depth that proved payable at the present adit level. This will be n6 easy, task, as the shaft, as it stands, has—perhaps from want of use, or the ground swelling—twisted considerably. The guides are all out of plumb, and the cap, and sole piece of the chamber useless. In fact, the «ill is gone altogether. . What repairs have been done on the main drive have- been, done ; well, the timbers well fitted, and drainage attended to. The reefs Mr. Hunter showed me were strong and well defined, but he has all his work cut out in managing the Nonpariel mine/it in many places presenting a fossicked appearance, promising much trouble to a manager ; but although this is Mr. Hunter's first essay in a managerial capacity, ho will, no doubt, come off creditably, as he holds some very good home credentials as a mine engineer.
