RIFLE RANGE.

Owing to tho exertion^ of Mr. Carpenter, M.P.C., the ProTincial Government, through Mr. J. Sheehan, have authorised a certain expenditure towards the formation of a first-class rifle range for the Thames Volunteers on>'the Thames beach, across the Kauaoranga. It will be known to our readers that our local marksmen are at present without a range, Tararu and Parawai having "both been closed. The range in question has a length of' lobo yards, and can be increased to 1500 if required for the small bore Henry rite, which we suppose the Defence Office will* shortly supply to the New Zealand Volunteer force. The ground was selected by. Messrs. Spencer, Murray, Walker, Hoskins and Major Cooper, and the carrying'out of all arrangements in connection with the work is in the hands of our District Engineer, Mr. James McLaren. ;
