The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. SATURDAY, JULY 4, 1874.

Thb annual meeting of ratepayers of the Kanaeranga Highway District, which.was: •to hare taken place to-day, will be held, as per advertisement, this day fortnight. This postponement has been rendered necessary by the amendments in the Highways Act passed during the recent session of the Provincial Council. Not

having received a copy of the amended Act, aßserited to by His Honor the Superintendent at the prorogation of the Council, we are unable to indicate the precise nature of the alterations from our own knowledge, but the following, from

.the Daily Southern Cross, would appear to* explain the reason which necessitated the postponement in the case of ' the Eauaerangn District meeting, and will be ' sufficimt as a guide for other District Boards whose meetings

have not yet been convened:—During the present month the annual meetings of the ratepayers in the various highway; districts throughout the province will be held. In the Highways Act which has^ been repealed by the recent legislation^ this subject, by the Provincial Council,; seven days' notice of the "annual meeting had to be given. This provision has been altered. The 17th clause of the new Highways Act states that the annual meeting shall be held " on some day during the month of July in every year, to be notified at least two weeks previously." This alteration of the law is an important

one, and one which has already led to more, than one mistake. In the districts in which the annual meetings have been

called .with less than fourteen days notice, the business of calling the mcct 1! ings will have to be gone "over again.
