The rider appended by the jury to their verdict on the late inquest, namely, that 'preventer chains should be used in all ■cases where heavy lifts were being hoisted in shafts, has been acted upon by, the Mining Inspector. The following is a copy of a letter which has been sent by Captain Goldsmith to the managers of all mines where the workings are carried on by moans of 'shafts. It is satisfactory to jeltm that the suggestion of the jury to "secure "the'"greatest—possible -nmQuni. of security to men engaged in :i dangerous occupation has been promptly acted i upon :~Grahainstown, June 27th, 187-&r-Sir,-—vt 'hereby- request that you will forthwith (within six days from date hereof) cause, if not already done, preventer chains of ample strengh to be provided and fitted to the cages of your shaft. Likewise that in all cases where weights are suspended by chains that you will not trust to a single link unless the same may be of very great proportional strength.—Henry Goldsmith, Mining Inspector.
