." The Bbute ! "—A Waterbury man has christened his daughter Glycerine. He says it will be easy to prefix " Nitro " ' if her temper resembles her mother's. . Sea-sickness.—The opinions <so commonly held in regard to sea-sickness; namely, that it is due either,to a congestion of the brain, or to a commotion in-line abdominal viscera caused by the motioi£of the vessel, are very plausibly combatted by M. Pellerin, who, in a paper read before the French Academy, attributes the malady to a deranged circulation of the blood produced by the. alternate rolling and heaving of the vessel. The result of this, he says, is not a congestion of the brain, which is, on the contrary, deprived of ' some of the blood required- to 1- keep up a stimulus of that nervons centre; that sensation which is Jfelt in *ea-sickness resembling peculiarly what ii felt immediately after a letting of blood;' when the patient sits or stands, namely, a disposition s t» vomit, or actual vomiting.' In support of this opinion, mention is mads of the fact that persons who are liable to seasickness experience its effects in a much, slighter degree, when they are in a hoiizontal position, the-relief thus afforded being like that which is produced in the same position when a person is in a T state of hyncope. ' '"'*'. The Tichboksb Case and the Pbess.— . We ( Law Journal) heartily agree with Mr Justice Mellor as " to the restraints that have been imposed upon the Press, and the extent of the pewer of fine and commitment. "-' We have read the suggestion that, if the Press- had been free to comment on the trial, there would have been no public sympathy for the defendant. That is true, and we may add, that there would have been no ■ Strong public * feeling against the defendant;. But would ■ that have been just ? Would if not have : i b.een most unjust that a man, being tried ', fora criminal offence, should be publicly condenned before the trial was over? What we want is a fair, trial before a jury and that end would not be promoted by the Press commenting on an issue sub judice. Mr Justice Mellor says,—"There -. is no greater friend of the freedom of the Press than myself." .. No greater '-' proof of friendship can- be given ,by a judge than a firm opposition to any abuse ; of the power or privileges of the Press. ,V The reason why the Press of England is "7 free is because it pays a willin^and honor- ' * able homagejfco the majesty of "the law. , That which Happened to an .
