KAUAERANGA HIGHWAY BOARD.
. A meeting of the above Board was held ast night at the office of the Board, Pollen-street. Present — Mr. Macnab (chairman), and Messrs Heron, Scott and Grenville. MINUTES. The minutes of the preceding meeting were read and confirmed. CBEDIT OF THE BOAED. The Secretary stated, in answer to a query from the Chairman, that there were £107 3s 6d available assets. It was decided, on the motion of Mr. Heron, that the £21 should be paid to the contractors for the Karaka-road culvert, undertaken jointly by the Borough Council and the Board, and that the Secretary should debit the Council with the half. ACCOUNTS. The wages sheet, amounting to £8, was put in and passed. The account of Mr. Dare for £8 was also passed for payment. ANNUAL MEETING. The question for a place to hold the annual meeting of ratepayers, and time for holding the came, was then considered. The Chairman said he had written to Mr. Berry—member of the Educational Committee—with reference to obtaining the Kauaeranga schoolroom for the purpose. Mr. Grenville thought there would not be the slightest difficulty about getting the schoolroom, so they might look upon that as settled. Mr Scott proposed that the time for holding the meeting; should be on Saturday, 4th day of July at 4 o'clock. The motion was carried. HIGHWAY GBANTS. Mr Heron proposed that the estimates having been passed, application should be made for the balance of the grant to the Board—namely £500. He thought.they should endeavour to obtain this sum due to them in order that the succeeding Board might have some capital wherewitn to commence their duties. Mr Scott seconded the motion and it was carried. BOAD WOBKS. Mr Grenville made mention of the bad drainage of Tommy's Lane, the water, in case ot a flush, rushing into the property of Mr Judd, and flooding that gentleman's premises. Two men might (he said) in a couple of days make a drain which would effectually carry the water off into Sandes-street, and thereby abate the nuisance./
The Chairman could appreciate the urgent necessity of these works, but could see no prospect of the Board having sufficient funds to undertake them. There was plenty of work for the men for weeks, but they had not actually the money to keep those men employed. It was thought inadvisable to undertake any further works, the completion of the present Board's term of office being so near at hand.
