(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib, —Mr. Soutcr in his speech on the Harbor accommodation at the Thames, mentioned that the Provincial Governments of Canterbury and Nelson erected wharves: this is perfectly tiue, but they were of so flimsy a description that the floods of 1868; washed them away. The wharf erected by the Nelson Gov?rnment was for their own use, for coal from the Brunner mine. The only wharves and-' protective works which have stood the" test of the terrible floods that have taken place at the Grey River, and saved 4 property to an incalcuable extent, are those erected after the- flood of 1872, by the Borough Council, on money borrowed from the * General Government* on tie ' security of their rate?.—l am, Sir, &c,
Gbkymouth.
